Enrichment Courses

Our Learn to Play Chess Program – Beginners Course is target at young children who do not have any knowledge of the game. They will start from learning the squares on the chessboard and thereafter they will be introduced to the game, the pieces, the movements, the value of the pieces and simple checkmates.  This course is also suitable for children who pick up the game from their parents or friends. Although they are able to make simple moves, it is important that they learn the basic fundamental aspects of the game on a structured and modular manner. There will be both theory and practical lessons to enable them to put into practise what they learnt during the course. At the end of the course the students will be assessed to determine their suitability to progress to the next level. We have children starting as young as 5 years of age. At the end of the course the chidren should be able to play a simple game.

The Learn to Play Chess Program – Elementary Course is the second module in our group enrichment program. Trainees should have preferably completed our Beginners Course before progressing to our Elementary level course.  Here, the students are once again reminded and refreshed on the importance and benefits of Chess Notations. They will follow up with acquiring some simple chemates variations. They should know how to develop the game and make good uses of the pieces on the board to achieve checkmate positions. They will learn to checkmate with Queen and Rook against lone King; Two Rooks against lone King; Queen against lone King; Rook and King against lone King; Checkmate patterns involving the pawns and Opening Strategy (control of centre, devlopment of pieces and protecting their Kings), After this course, the trainees will once again be assessed  for suitability to progress to the Intermediate level (1).

Our ” Approach to Chess Competitions ” Program is aimed at helping young children better prepare for competitions and it is suitable even for children who have taken part in many competitions. The program will be conducted by an experienced player,  arbiter and organizer. The program will focus on topics such as Chess Basics, Opening Strategies, Approach to Middle Game, Endgame Theories and Tactics and FIDE Laws of Chess including the conduct of players and arbiters.  The Course shall close with a mini-chess competition among the course participants enabling them to put into practise what they learnt
